The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s soccer team has added a dynamic attacking option with the commitment of winger Maggie Guenther for the upcoming season.
A graduate of Lethbridge Collegiate Institute and a member of the Lethbridge Football Club (LFC), Guenther will stay close to home as she begins her post-secondary studies in the General Arts and Science program this fall.
For Guenther, the decision to join the Kodiaks came after building a connection with the program and following the team’s success from the stands.
“I reached out to [Kodiaks soccer Head] Coach Mike [Racz] and we emailed back and forth, and then we set up a date for signing,” says Guenther. “I’ve heard great things about the polytechnic, and it was really important for me to stay home. The Kodiaks are a really good team, so I’m excited to play with them.”
Racz says Guenther brings a valuable attacking presence to the Kodiaks, particularly in wide areas.
“Maggie is another strong local player who has developed through the LFC system,” says Racz. “She brings quality to our attacking unit, especially out wide. She’s very effective at recognizing and attacking space behind opposing fullbacks, which adds an important dimension to our offense.”
Racz adds her ability to stretch the field and create opportunities will strengthen the team’s offensive depth.
“My biggest strength is my speed, so I like being on the wing where I can use that,” says Guenther. “I like being creative in the box, crossing it or shooting.”
Racz says he believes Guenther will continue to develop within the Kodiaks system as she adjusts to the post-secondary level.
“I see Maggie growing into a more complete and versatile attacking player,” he says. “As she gains experience, she’ll continue to improve her timing of runs, decision making in transition and her ability to influence play both on and off the ball.”
He adds Guenther has already integrated well into the team environment.
“Maggie has spent time around our group and has fit in very well,” says Racz. “She embodies the qualities we value within our program and is exactly the type of player who strengthens our team culture.”
Guenther says she is looking forward to the opportunity to compete at the next level and connect with new teammates.
She also credits her parents and LFC Technical Director Sam Heap for their support throughout her soccer journey.
