The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men’s volleyball team is excited to welcome Gavin Worobec to the 2025-26 roster.
The five-foot-10 high-flyer has already had a decorated volleyball career, helping lead the Strathcona Christian Academy Secondary Eagles to an Edmonton Metro City Championship and a 3A provincial silver medal in 2024. He also joined the highly successful Park Elite Volleyball Club, which earned medals at various Volleyball Alberta events. Worobec played a key role in the success of both teams and represented Volleyball Alberta in 2023.
Worobec says his family has been the biggest influence in his success so far in volleyball.
“My family has always supported me and been my biggest fans throughout my career,” he says. “I just want to make them proud, and being a Kodiak is a huge step in my volleyball career.”
The recruitment process for Worobec began when Kodiaks head coach Greg Gibos spotted him at various club tournaments this season, including the Best of the West tournament where he led his team to a top five finish.
“Gavin literally jumps off the page; he has a 45-inch vertical, but he’s also a dedicated and passionate teammate,” says Gibos. “Even though he scores and passes at an extremely high level, the way he interacted with his teammates is what really drew us to him as an athlete.”
During follow up conversations with Worobec, Kodiaks coaches said they could tell he had a passion for the program and that he believed in the vision of what it means to be a Kodiak.
“I truly think he’s one of the most skilled athletes in this graduating class and we’re thrilled he’s chosen to be a Kodiak,” says Gibos. “Everyone I chatted with about Gavin also mentioned how awesome a teammate he is, and I haven’t seen one negative aspect of his energy. Good people make great Kodiaks, and I think we’ve got another one coming in with Gavin.”
Worobec has also made sacrifices to make volleyball part of his life. He’s originally from Vegreville, Alta. but moved closer to Edmonton to push himself to play at a higher-level during school and club seasons. This summer, he played in the competitive V-League which houses some of the best post-secondary and professional athletes in Edmonton.
“Becoming a Kodiak is the perfect fit for me as it’s a program I know I can thrive in,” says Worobec. “I was drawn to their overall success over the last decade and have heard their culture is incredible. I want to work incredibly hard and continue to push this program to new heights and growth.”
Worobec has enrolled in Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Environmental Assessment and Restoration program and has plans to ladder into the Bachelor of Ecosystem Management program after two years.
“Being able to compete and complete my degree at the institution is a huge win for me as well,” he says.
