The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men’s soccer team has added Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference transfer Lucas Miller to its roster.
Miller played with the Olds College Broncos last season where he won their Rookie of the Year award. He’s now enrolled in the polytechnic’s Business Administration – Management diploma program.
In addition to valuable experience in the league, Kodiaks coaches say Miller brings an attitude for improvement, energy and creativity to the team.
Originally from Medicine Hat, Miller was a Medicine Hat College Rattler ball boy. He also played for the Lethbridge Football Club and through that organization, made connections with current Kodiaks players – a key factor when deciding to play for the program.
“I knew a lot of the guys on the team, and I liked [that the city] was bigger too,” says Miller. “I’m closer to home and family as well.”
After Miller reached out to the Kodiaks with an interest in joining the team, Head Coach Mike Racz re-watched last year’s Kodiaks game film against the Broncos. He says he was impressed with what he saw.
“Lucas also played under our assistant coach Mark Meerkerk, who spoke very highly of his work rate and attitude,” says Racz. “Beyond his qualities on the pitch, Lucas has fit in quickly with the team. That ability to connect with teammates and contribute positively to the group made it clear he was a great fit.”
Racz says Miller brings tremendous energy to the midfield and always seems to be in motion, constantly working to create options for his teammates and disrupt the opposition. He also says he’s capable of scoring some fantastic goals from distance.
“I'm looking forward to just playing soccer every day and having fun and being in a team environment,” says Miller of the upcoming season.
The Kodiaks kick off their season with a set of home games this weekend. They’ll take on Miller’s former team, the Olds College Broncos, tomorrow and the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings on Sunday.
