Sept. 17, 2018 - Picking up where she left off last year, Sophia Nowicki started off her second ACAC cross country season with a gold medal performance at the Running Room Grand Prix #2 in Calgary last Saturday.
The Kodiaks star sophomore ran the 6km circuit in 22:33, almost a full minute ahead of second place finisher Emilie Mann from SAIT. Nowicki helped lead the Kodiaks women's team to an overall first place team performance, beating out rivals from Red Deer, SAIT and St. Mary's University. Emily Spencer finished fifth among ACAC runners with a time of 24:26, while Salma Moreira and Rebecca Sweeney rounded out the Kodiaks top four scoring with times of 25:12 and 26:53 respectively.
On the men's side, a five-man Kodiaks squad finished third overall in the team standings. Timothy Ngetich made a strong Kodiaks debut, overcoming a mid-race injury to finish sixth overall in the 8km race with a time of 28:13. Connor Jackson was close behind in his debut Kodiaks run, finishing eighth overall with a time of 28:26.
Second year Kodiak Danny Robdrup finished in 17th with a time of 31:11, while Kevin Kipchumba and Tanner Rent finished with times of 33:13 and 34:17 respectively. SAIT took home first place team overall, while Red Deer College finished second.
The Kodiaks will now gear up to host the Running Room ACAC Grand Prix #3, which will take place at Nicholas Sheran Park next Saturday as part of the annual community "Run for the Pumpkin" race. The community races begin at 11 a.m., while the ACAC women's race starts at 1 p.m. with the men to follow at 1:45 p.m.
