Oct. 1, 2018 - Make it three wins in three races for Sophia Nowicki and the Kodiaks women’s cross-country team.
Nowicki won her third consecutive Running Room ACAC Grand Prix on Saturday, completing the Lloydminster course in 24:15, a full 17 seconds ahead of second place finisher Jill Stewart of Red Deer College.
The Kodiaks narrowly took home top spot thanks to a terrific team performance, boosted by a fourth place finish from Emily Spencer who finished with a time of 25:08. Lethbridge beat out Red Deer College by three points to take top honours.
Salma Moreira’s time of 27:11 helped her finish in 11th, while Rebecca Sweeney rounded out the team scoring with a time of 27:33, placing her 13th overall.
Brooklyn Vogel (27:56) finished 18th, Janelle Graham (28:30) placed 22nd and Vildana Rekic (31:05) came in 34th.
The race represented a great test for the Kodiaks, as it was the first time they went head to head against every team in the ACAC. The course also served as a championship preview, with the Running Room ACAC championships scheduled to be held in Lloydminster on Oct. 27.
On the men’s side, the Kodiaks saw another week of improvement from key runners Timothy Ngetich (29:17) and Connor Jackson (29:33), who finished sixth and seventh respectively.
Tanner Rent (32:32) and Eliud Kiptum (36:53) rounded out the scoring for the Kodiaks.
Hurt by a key injury to Danny Robdrup, the Kodiaks finished fifth overall in the team standings. Red Deer College took home the overall team win, with SAIT coming in second and Grande Prairie Regional College taking third.
The Kodiaks now have a weekend off before traveling to Camrose on Oct. 13 for their final Grand Prix tune-up. The team will return to Lloydminster for the ACAC championships on Oct. 27.
