Nowicki and Rots named Kodiaks AOTW

Sept. 21 - Following a solid opening weekend for Kodiaks Cross Country, a pair of XC athletes have been named Kodiaks athletes of the week!

Sophia Nowicki, XC

Sophia, a first year GNS/Nursing student-athlete, had a memorable first race as a Kodiak while competing for the first time in an ACAC Grand Prix event.

Nowicki ran a solid race and placed second overall in the women's 6K, helping the Kodiaks to a team finish of third overall in their season opening event.

Durell Rots, XC

Also competing in his first ACAC Grand Prix event, Durell Rots paced the Kodiaks men's side on a tough 8k course.

The first year General Studies student-athlete finished fifth place overall in the men's race, helping lead the Kodiaks into a second place team tie with RDC.

Coach's Corner

Kodiaks Cross Country head coach Bertil Johannson had this to say about his team's opening performance last weekend:

"We had pretty good overall performances at an “extreme” course with challenging hills, turns and soft grass. Top rookie Sophia Nowicki from Bragg Creek came through as she claimed 2nd ACAC female and Durell Rots was a strong 5th, ahead of another first year student-athlete in Evans Korir, who was 7th. The men’s team battled with RDC and tied for 2nd team overall, and the women’s team came 3rd mostly due to top returnee Emily Spencer who DNF due to slight injury. So overall a good start of the season with 15 women and 9 men on the XC roster." -BJ
