Nov. 27, 2018 - Both Kodiaks basketball teams picked up big wins over rival Red Deer College on Saturday, but each victory was not without adversity.
The women's team faced an early deficit after a slow start, while the men's team had one of their stars get into early foul trouble.
In each case, the Kodiaks had players step up when they need it the most. Jocelyn Neilson and Orin Porter Jr. had standout performances, and have been named the Mucho Burrito Kodiaks Athletes of the Week.
Congrats Orin and Jocelyn! Each player will receive a gift certificate to Mucho Burrito.
Orin Porter Jr. - MBB
Orin filled up the stat sheet for the Kodiaks in a huge 90-83 win over south division rival Red Deer College.
With teammate Lincoln Anderson in early foul trouble, the Kodiaks relied on Orin to lead their offense. He responded in a big way, draining 20 points while adding six rebounds and four assists. On defence he was a menace, compiling four steals and two blocks.
Orin is also a top five leader in multiple conference categories, including points per game and field goal percentage.
Jocelyn Neilson - WBB
With her team trailing early, Jocelyn came off the bench and gave the Kodiaks the spark they needed.
She delivered a double-double performance, draining 22 points while adding 11 rebounds. Many of her points were earned the hard way, with great body position and strength in the paint. Eight points in the first quarter helped the Kodiaks erase an early deficit.
Her high-energy defence also led to four steals and two blocks.
Both Kodiaks volleyball and basketball teams are finished their fall semester schedules and will return to ACAC regular season play in early January.
