Nowicki and Wikenheiser named Moxie's AOTW

Nov. 15, 2017 - Helping the Kodiaks to a pair of big upset performances last weekend, CCAA bronze medalist Sophia Nowicki and Zach Wikenheiser have been named the Kodiaks Moxie's Athletes of the Week! Each will receive a $20 gift card to Moxie's Lethbridge.

Sophia Nowicki, WXC

Nowicki claimed a bronze medal in the women’s 6K run on Saturday at the 2017 CCAA Cross Country National Championships in Blainville, Quebec.

Racing through the frigid air of Blainville Equestrian Park, Nowicki’s season best time of 22:01 placed her on the podium, finishing nine seconds ahead of her ACAC rival Jordanna Cota of Red Deer College, who was undefeated in ACAC competition throughout the season.

A combination of season-long improvements to her running stride and the relatively flat course terrain worked to Nowicki’s advantage, says head coach Bertil Johannson.

“It’s a flatter course so it was more suitable for a runner type like Sophia, with the style of running we’ve been working on with her,” said Johansson. “It was an amazing time. The time that Sophia actually achieved puts her up there with some of the all-time great Kodiaks performances in the last 15 years.”

Nowicki's performance helped the Kodiaks to a sixth overall finish.

Zach Wikenheiser, MVB

Wikenheiser quarterbacked the Kodiaks to an upset 3-0 victory over CCAA number two ranked SAIT on Friday.

Zach led the way with 24 assists, two kills, six digs and a block in the upset on Friday evening. Zach then added 31 assists, 9 digs and a block on Saturday in the Kodiaks 3-1 loss in Calgary.
