Whitehead, Nowicki named November AOTM

Dec. 23, 2017 - After reaching impressive personal milestones, Dax Whitehead (MVB) and Sophia Nowicki (WXC) were named Kodiaks Athletes of the Month for November!

Dax Whitehead - MVB

Helping the Kodiaks to a 7-5 record in the first half, Whitehead has emerged as a true leader for Lethbridge in his fourth ACAC season.

Whitehead is currently third in the conference in hitting percentage (.495), and recently set the Kodiaks all time kills record, breaking Jeffrey Marthaller’s record of 795.

He will look to guide the Kodiaks to a return to the ACAC playoffs in the second half, as the team will begin 2018 with a home match against Ambrose on Jan. 5.

Sophia Nowicki - WXC

Nowicki capped off an impressive rookie debut running cross country for the Kodiaks, claiming an ACAC podium finish and topping that off with a bronze medal at CCAA Nationals in Blainville, Quebec.

Racing through the frigid air of Blainville Equestrian Park, Nowicki’s season best time of 22:01 placed her on the podium, finishing nine seconds ahead of her ACAC rival Jordanna Cota of Red Deer College, who was undefeated in ACAC competition throughout the season.

A combination of season-long improvements to her running stride and the relatively flat course terrain worked to Nowicki’s advantage, says head coach Bertil Johannson.

“It’s a flatter course so it was more suitable for a runner type like Sophia, with the style of running we’ve been working on with her,” said Johansson. “It was an amazing time. The time that Sophia actually achieved puts her up there with some of the all-time great Kodiaks performances in the last 15 years.”

Nowicki's performance helped the Kodiaks to a sixth overall finish at nationals.
