Oct. 31, 2018 - On a championship weekend that was marked by great team performances, it is fitting that this week's edition of the Mucho Burrito Athletes of the Week celebrates multiple teams that rose to the occasion when it mattered most.
It was a historic weekend for the Kodiaks women’s soccer team, as they won their first playoff game in 24 years and eventually went on to earn an ACAC bronze medal, their first medal since 1994.
The team faced loads of adversity throughout the entire season but still managed to secure third place in the ACAC south division during the regular season. The team then surprised The King's University 2-1 in the quarterfinal, before falling in the semis to top-seeded SAIT in what was a hard fought game. The team then bounced back to secure a dramatic penalty kick victory in the bronze medal game, with goalkeeper Paige Gattafoni making three of five saves to help the Kodiaks head home with a medal.
Women's and Men's Cross Country
It was a banner weekend for Kodiaks cross country at the ACAC championships in Vermilion, highlighted by a pair of gold medal performances. Sophia Nowicki won the individual ACAC title, winning her fifth straight race to complete an undefeated season. She also helped the Kodiaks women's team claim the overall team title, allowing them to take home the 2018 ACAC championship banner. Emily Spencer, Salma Moreira and Janelle Graham were all part of the winning team of four runners, while Brooklyn Vogel, Rebecca Sweeney and Vildana Rekic all helped to push their teammates to victory.
The men’s team also had a successful weekend, overcoming injuries to claim a bronze medal. Leading the charge was rookie Timonthy Kimaiyo (sixth overall) while Connor Jackson finished close behind in eighth. The performance helped the team secure a berth at the 2018 CCAA National Championships in Toronto on Nov. 10.
