VB | Make it 10! Kodiaks MVB defeats MHC

Nov. 10, 2018 - The Kodiaks men's volleyball team continued their historic start on Saturday night, defeating the Medicine Hat Rattlers 3-1 (25-20, 26-24, 25-27, 25-14) to complete a two-game sweep of their Highway 3 rivals.

The undefeated start is the best in program history and people are starting to take notice, as evidenced by the sizable crowd taking in the game at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

Carter Hansen had an astounding 29 kills for the Kodiaks, hitting for a sharp .489 percentage. Dax Whitehead had 11 kills while Matt Primrose had an impressive 13 digs for the home side. Zach Wikenheiser had 52 assists at setter.

The Rattlers came out strong in the first set but the Kodiaks quickly regrouped and found their game. Hansen was a powerhouse at the net, leading the team in kills throughout the set while leading the Kodiaks to a 25-20 victory.

Medicine Hat came out with a vengeance in the second set, gaining a small three point lead over the Kodiaks midway through the set. Once again, Lethbridge regained their footing to take back the lead after a series of powerful kills from Whitehead and Hansen. The set shifted into a point-for-point battle to the end, with the Kodiaks squeaking by with a 26-24 victory to put them on the verge of victory.

Not ready to give in, the Rattlers took an exhilerating third set 27-25 thanks to strong play from Alfred Dalevik. The Kodiaks trailed by as many as four points but did rally back to tie the match at 24, a comeback punctuated by a huge Michael Hummel block to stave off the Rattler's first set point. The home side was unable to complete the straight sets sweep, however, with Medicine Hat stealing the two points they needed to force a fourth set.

The Kodiaks saved their best volleyball for the fourth set, finally clicking on all cylinders with a 25-14 set win. Whitehead and Hansen continued their dominance of the court, throwing the Rattlers off stride to claim the win.

Lethbridge (10-0) will now enjoy a bye week before they get set to host the Olds College Broncos during the Kodiaks Alumni Weekend on Nov. 23-24.

All Kodiaks Alumni are invited to attend the game and enjoy a special pre-game dinner starting at 5 p.m.

Admission to the games on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 will be by donation, as the Kodiaks will be fundraising for athlete scholarships.

WVB | Rattlers finish off sweep of Kodiaks

The rough start to the season continued for the Kodiaks women's team, as they fell in straight sets to the Medicine Hat Rattlers (25-15, 25-21, 25-16) on Saturday.

The Kodiaks (1-9) have now lost nine in a row after winning their opening match.

Lethbridge started out the match by showing off a new look, sporting a starting line-up of primarily first year athletes who came ready to impress. The new faces on the Kodiaks proved to be strong at the net, powering down some impressive shots. Still, it was not enough to defeat an emerging Rattlers team, with MHC powering their way to a 25-15 victory.

Not ready to back down, the Kodiaks started out the second set with a new-found intensity. The home side was led by second year setter Jamie Brown, who not only demonstrated her ability to place the ball but also showed her strength as a hitter. Lethbridge's Grace Kazanowsi also shined for the Kodiaks, but once again the team was unable to break the Rattler's momentum. Medicine Hat rallied to take a small lead late in the set then held off a Lethbridge charge to win 25-21.

The Rattlers entered the third set determined to end the game early, and they did just that. Brook Christie's well-rounded play shone through on both sides of the ball for Medicine Hat. Getting under the Kodiaks skin, the Rattlers managed to pull ahead midway through the set, clinching the match with a 25-16 set victory.

Lethbridge will now rest during a bye week before they get set to host the Olds College Broncos during the Kodiaks Alumni Weekend on Nov. 23-24.

All Kodiaks Alumni are invited to attend the game and enjoy a special pre-game dinner starting at 5 p.m.

Admission to the games on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 will be by donation, as the Kodiaks will be fundraising for athlete scholarships.
