Olsen to represent Canada at 2019 Parapan American Games

July 11, 2019 - Just one year after suffering a life-altering accident, Kodiaks soccer player Payden Olsen is returning to the court of competition.

Olsen has officially been selected to join the Canadian national sitting volleyball team and will represent her country next month at the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru.

After being named "Newcomer of the Year" in her rookie season with the Kodiaks in 2017, Olsen sustained extensive injuries in a lawn mower accident last July. The accident resulted in the amputation of her right foot and major reconstructive surgery on her left foot.

Since the accident, Olsen has insisted she "would be back" sooner than later. With a determined spirit she has undergone an aggressive rehab process, allowing her to hit the court and earn a spot on a sitting volleyball team that is currently ranked sixth in the world.

Now, she will travel to Peru with her teammates in pursuit of qualifying for a berth in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic games. The team will earn a spot if they finish first or second behind the United States, who have already qualified for the Tokyo games.

The Parapan American Games kick off on August 23 and will run until Sept. 1. The Peru games are expected to surpass the 2015 edition in Toronto as the largest Parapan Am Games ever, with a record 1,850 athletes ready to participate.
