Nov. 6, 2018 - October was full of amazing championships performances for Kodiaks Athletics, highlighted by a women's cross country ACAC championship, a bronze medal performance from men's cross country, as well as a great showing from both men's and women's soccer teams.
Two leaders stood out in particular, with Ben Knight (MSOC) and Sophia Nowicki (WXC) delivering performances that have earned them October Moxie's and Italian Table Athletes of the Month honours.
Congrats Ben and Sophia! Each winner will receive a $40 gift certificate to Moxie’s or Italian Table.
Sophia Nowicki (WXC)
Sophia finished off an undefeated season at the ACAC Championships in Vermilion, taking gold by winning the women’s 6km race by over 25 seconds. She also guided her teammates to a team title, as the Kodiaks narrowly defeated Red Deer for the ACAC crown.
The Kodiaks will now prepare for CCAA Nationals in Toronto on Nov. 10, where Sophia and her teammates enter as the top ranked team in Canada. It will be a great test for Nowicki, as the second year Nursing student from Bragg Creek, Alta. will look to improve on last year’s CCAA bronze medal performance.
Ben Knight (MSOC)
Providing his young team with veteran leadership all season, Knight came up big when his team needed him the most. The Kodiaks captain was stellar during the 2018 ACAC Championships, earning a tournament all-star nod after leading his team to the bronze medal game.
Knight’s play was instrumental to his team’s success down the stretch, helping the Kodiaks move into second place during the final weekend of the season. His great distribution and ability to slow down the game led to great possession and many offensive chances. His leadership and sportsmanship also helped him earn an ACAC All-Conference award for his play during the regular season.
