MVB | Kodiaks 3, Rattlers 0
Jan. 10, 2019 - New year, same dominance.
The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team continued their winning ways on Thursday night, improving to 13-0 with a straight-sets dismantling (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) of the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
Carter Hansen continued his torrid offensive pace, proving unstoppable while striking down 17 kills.
Tony Albizzati and Dax Whitehead were extremely efficient on offence, grabbing ten kills each while hitting for .625 and .588 percentages respectively.
If head coach Greg Gibos wasn’t a little worried about holiday rust, he admittedly would have been lying.
Despite taking a few plays to get back in the groove, his team put any concerns to rest early on.
Six kills from Hansen paced the hosts in the first set, as they managed to pull away from the Rattlers late in the frame by persisting with their power attack.
Lethbridge then exploited Rattler’s defensive structure in set two, harmoniously mixing in their power game with carefully timed drop shots. Hansen grabbed another six kills in the frame, while Albizzati shined with five of his own.
Showing no mercy, the Kodiaks maintained the pressure in set three. Sensing they could put the game away, the Kodiaks jumped out to a 14-6 advantage and coasted to the straight sets win.
Matt Primrose had 11 digs in the win, including some absolute jaw dropping plays that drew a loud reaction from a rowdy Kodiaks crowd of around 400.
Zach Wikenheiser kept the Kodiaks offense turning all night long, grabbing 36 assists at setter.
The win increases the Kodiaks lead on the ACAC south division, while the Rattlers (7-8) took a hit to their playoff hopes.
The teams will be back in action Saturday afternoon in Medicine Hat to conclude their season series.
