MSOC | Adekunle goal leads Kodiaks past Rattlers

Oct. 1, 2019 - In a rivalry game ripe with playoff implications, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s soccer team once again used a set piece to provide all the offence they would need in a 1-nil victory over Medicine Hat College last Saturday.

The game began with just two points separating the clubs in the standings and it showed on the field, with the intensity quickly reaching near playoff level. The rapidly decreasing temperatures did little to slow the pace of the game down, although the Kodiaks were able to put a damper on the speedy transition game MHC was trying to implement.

Using crosses and precision passing to generate offensive chances, the Kodiaks finally broke through in the 35th minute.

A set piece just outside the 18 yard box saw Sodiq Adekunle hammer the ball low short side for his sixth tally of the season and the first goal of the match.

The Kodiaks held the 1-0 lead into half  and the temperature outside continued to drop rapidly as the day wore on, reaching below freezing at the start of the second half.

The Rattlers nearly drew even with an early free kick inside 20 yards but were unable to convert. This became the story of the second half for the home side, as the Kodiaks continued to withstand any pushes from the desperate hosts.

Eventually time ran out on the Rattlers and the Kodiaks collected their fourth straight win, pushing them to the top of the table in the ACAC south division.

Adkunle was named the ACAC Player of the Game for Lethbridge, while Tom Bernhardt took the honours for the Rattlers.
