Jan. 9, 2019 – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s basketball team showed no rust despite a lengthy holiday break, as they opened 2020 by coasting to an 86-61 road victory over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Thursday night.

A balanced scoring approach and sensational defence set the tone for the Kodiaks, who remain undefeated at 11-0 to start the season. Orin Porter Jr. and Steele Stef each led the way with 16 points while Chase Bohne recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. Chris Thomson brought down a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Kodiaks started the game with a quick uncontested layup and didn’t slow down while jumping out to a 22-12 lead. Medicine Hat found themselves in early foul trouble much to the chagrin of their head coach, who was ejected by the officials just six minutes into the contest.

While the Rattlers received a boost from the ejection and managed to cut the lead to five at the end of the first, the Kodiaks regrouped and put the game away in the second quarter. Lethbridge gave up just 12 points while pouring in 24 of their own to take a 17-point lead into the break.

A tightly contested third quarter kept the game interesting, but each time the Rattlers made a push the Kodiaks had an answer. Lethbridge put the game to bed by outscoring the Rattlers 19-12 in the final frame.

The Kodiaks shot 41.6% from the floor, opposed to the Rattlers 30.5%. Lethbridge also won the rebounding battle 48-32. The difference in the game, however, could be attributed to the Kodiaks dominance off the fast break, as they scored 23 points off of 21 MHC turnovers. Medicine Hat scored just three points off of 15 Lethbridge turnovers.

Ranked second in the nation by the CCAA, the Kodiaks will now have a weekend off before returning to the court for an important home-and-home with Ambrose next weekend. The team will travel to Calgary to take on the Lions on Friday, Jan. 17 before returning home to the Val Matteotti Gym for the rematch next Saturday, Jan. 18. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and tickets are available at the door.
